The second generation 300ZX was released in 1989 as a 1990 model and was a complete redesign from it's predecessor.
Nissan, looking to reclaim it's leadership in the sportscar genera, designed the "Z32" from a clean sheet of paper. Although the basic V6 of it's predecessor was retained it was updated significantly in it's new incarnation.
